«Avere grinta, determinazione e tenacia, non farsi spaventare dalla fatica». «Mettersi in gioco davvero senza aver paura di lasciare la propria comfort zone». «Trovare la bellezza negli sbagli, imparando dagli errori invece di scoraggiarsi». «Allenare le passioni e cercare sempre di essere una versione migliore di sé stessi». In poche parole: «Non lasciarsi vivere dalla vita, ma viverla in prima persona». Chiedere la ricetta del successo a Gianluca Fiume, Ceo di Piaggio Asia Pacific, significa scoprire che non esiste una formula magica, che la risposta risiede invece nella predisposizione mentale a trasformare gli ostacoli in opportunità. Bolzanino di nascita, trentino per formazione, cittadino del mondo e ambasciatore della bellezza italiana nel mondo, Fiume intreccia nell'eloquio la preparazione di un uomo di cultura, un'esperienza da top manager e la schiettezza di linguaggio di un amico. Alumno UniTrento, tornerà in città 34 anni dopo la laurea in Economia e Commercio per raccontare la sua storia ai neolaureati e alle neolaureate dell'Ateneo trentino. Lo farà in qualità di testimonial della Cerimonia di laurea di venerdì 8 maggio 2026, per ricordare che «ogni traguardo non è che il primo passo di un nuovo cammino».
Dottor Fiume, all'Università di Trento si laureò in Economia e Commercio. Cosa ricorda di quel giorno? Dove l’ha portata la vita da allora?
«Ricordo bene il 21 maggio 1992. Quando i miei conoscenti e amici mi vedevano in giacca e cravatta reagivano stupiti: non credevano mi stessi laureando. Allora ero proiettato a divenire un manager, "di fiducia", come amavo dire. Volevo anche essere cittadino del mondo e sono riuscito a diventarlo. Il ruolo l’ho sempre sentito addosso: sono i miei familiari a ricordarmi spesso la strada fatta, che per me non è un punto d'arrivo, ma un punto di partenza. Perché nella vita conta il tracciato, il viaggio, fatto anche di sacrifici e notti insonni. Senza fatica, infatti, non si combina nulla, non si esce dalla propria comfort zone. Dico sempre: "Se sei il migliore nella stanza, sei nella stanza sbagliata". Ricordo a me stesso di lavorare per essere una versione migliore del Gianluca precedente. È importante, professionalmente e personalmente, progredire sempre».
Qual è il suo legame con l'Italia e il Trentino?
«Tornare in Trentino a parlare agli studenti e alle studentesse per me è un onore. Nonché un'opportunità di rivedere Trento che nel 1992 ho lasciato un bel gioiello, ma che ora ritrovo in una veste più profonda qualitativamente parlando: è una città che coniuga in sé immagine e sostanza, la storia che trasmette. Ho il passaporto italiano, ma da nove anni sono in Asia e ora vivo in Vietnam. Purtroppo sono poche le occasioni di venire in Italia: gli incontri a Milano, le visite alla famiglia Colaninno a Mantova, gli appuntamenti in sede Piaggio a Pontedera. Anche la mia famiglia chiama da Rovereto, città dei miei genitori, di mio fratello e della sua famiglia, purtroppo però nel 2025 sono riuscito a tornare per loro solo per nove giorni».
Qual è l'insegnamento più importante che ha ricevuto all'Università di Trento?
«Rispondo con una metafora: l’università ti permette di creare e aprire cassetti nella testa, poi la vita te li fa riempire a seconda delle tue passioni e dei tuoi interessi. L'università è una palestra e mi ha allenato a questo processo».
Cosa si sente di dire ai ragazzi e alle ragazze che si laureano oggi?
«Avete voglia di vincere? Dovete faticare: serve grinta per uscire dalla propria comfort zone, bisogna fare fatica sorridendo. Perché la vita è un never ending game, una continua ricerca di sé stessi. Si procede seguendo una strada costellata di valori e persone e le opportunità dipendono spesso da come ci si pone su questo cammino. Ai neolaureati e alle neolaureate dico: "Non dovete lasciare che sia la vita a vivere voi, ma dovete viverla". Dobbiamo essere noi stessi, vivere di più, trovare una traiettoria e seguirla. La passione, non mi stanco di ripetere, si trova allenandola».
E gli ostacoli? Le partite perse?
«Queste ultime sono quelle che danno più lezioni: è bello perdere e sbagliare se si impara dagli errori. La determinazione e la tenacia, poi, fanno andare avanti, assieme ai valori, la fede, l'onestà, la semplicità, il rispetto per gli altri, la convinzione che siamo tutti uguali e che i soldi degli altri sono più importanti dei nostri. Non dobbiamo farci accecare dal contingente, né soffocare dalle difficoltà e abbandonarci ad esse. Importante è inoltre superare la rigidità tipica dell'uomo».
Cosa intende?
«Il mondo è rigido, le persone tendono a essere imbalsamate nel loro ruolo. Da giovani, poi, si ha più paura perché si ha di più da perdere e quindi da cercare di conservare in termini di ruolo sociale. Ma bisogna superare la rigidità, allenare la capacità di cambiare nella testa, con le mani e il cuore. Gli ambienti di lavoro cercano sempre più persone che sappiano mettersi in gioco e chi lo sa fare fa la differenza nelle realtà lavorative. La flessibilità è fondamentale e la si insegna e la si apprende con l'education, con la formazione, l’istruzione e l’esempio. L’ho imparato a mie spese: ho trascorso la gran parte della mia vita in Paesi in via di sviluppo. Sono stato anche in Israele negli anni Novanta e poi in Medio Oriente, in Africa».
A portare l'eccellenza italiana nel mondo. Qual è lo stato di salute del Made in Italy?
«Dire che sei italiano addolcisce tutti gli atteggiamenti delle persone con cui ci si confronta ed è certamente un’importante freccia al nostro arco. Il Made in Italy, poi, è un enorme vantaggio competitivo che deve diventare sempre più sistema. Come italiani dobbiamo lavorarci, ora o mai più. Il nostro prodotto è un’emozione che tocca tutti i cittadini del pianeta, che parla ai sentimenti di chi è predisposto al bello, al saper vivere. Dobbiamo far aumentare sempre di più questo vantaggio, solidificarlo e trasmetterlo in modo vocale».

"Have grit, determination and persistence, and have no fear of hard work." "Get involved and don't be afraid of leaving your comfort zone." "See the good side of making mistakes, that is learning from them instead of letting them bring you down." "Train your passions and always try to be a better version of yourself." In a nutshell: "Don't let life happen to you: go out and live it." If you ask Gianluca Fiume, CEO of Piaggio Asia Pacific, his recipe for success, you will discover that there is no magic ingredient: the answer lies instead in the mental predisposition to turn obstacles into opportunities. Born in Bolzano and raised in Trentino, he is a citizen of the world and an ambassador of Italian excellence. His words combine the education of a man of culture, experience as a top manager and the frankness of someone speaking to a friend. A former UniTrento student, he is back in Trento 34 years after graduating in Economics and Commerce to tell his story to recent graduates of the University. He will give a speech at the graduation ceremony of Friday 8 May 2026, to remember that "every achievement is only the first step on a new path."
Mr. Fiume, you graduated in Economics and Commerce from the University of Trento. What do you remember about that day? Where has life taken you since then?
"I remember that day well, 21 May 1992. My friends and family were astonished when they saw me in suit and tie: they could not believe I was graduating. At that time, I was determined to become a trusted manager, as I liked to say. I also wanted to be a citizen of the world, and I managed to become one. I have always felt that that was my place: it is often my family who remind me of the journey I have made, which for me is not a point of arrival, but a point of departure. Because what count in life is the journey, sacrifices and sleepless nights included. Without effort, without ever leaving our comfort zone, we can't build anything. I always say, “If you're the best in the room, you're in the wrong room.” I remind myself to work hard to be a better version of my previous self. It is important, professionally and personally, to always progress.
"What is your connection with Italy and Trentino?
"It is an honour for me to be back in Trentino to speak to the students. And I am thankful for the opportunity to be in Trento again. When I left, in 1992, it was a gem, but now it is even better in terms of quality of life, combining image and substance, with a dense history. I have an Italian passport, but I have been in Asia for nine years and I live in Vietnam now. I hardly ever have a chance to come to Italy, unfortunately: sometimes I have meetings in Milan, visit the Colaninno family in Mantua, or go to the Piaggio headquarters in Pontedera. My family in Rovereto would like to see me more often. I have my parents, my brother and his family there, but unfortunately in 2025 I was only able to visit for nine days."
What is the most important lesson you learned at the University of Trento?
"Let me answer with a metaphor: at the university, you create and open drawers in your head; then life makes you fill them according to your passions and your interests. The university is a gym that helped me train in this process."
Would you like to leave a message for the young men and women graduating today?
"If you want to be winners, you'll have to work hard and you need the courage to get out of your comfort zone, and work with a smile on your face. Because life is a never-ending game, a continuous search for oneself. On our journey, we meet people and opportunities, and our future often depends on how we set out on this path. To recent graduates, I say: "Don't let life happen to you: go out and live it." We have to be ourselves, live more, find our way and follow it. Passion must be trained, I never tire of repeating it."
What about obstacles? The matches you lose?
"The matches you lose are the ones that teach you the most: there is no harm in losing if you learn from your mistakes. Your determination and strength will help you move forward, along with values, faith, honesty, simplicity, respect for others, the belief that we are all equals and that other people's money is more important than our own. We must not be blinded by the present moment, nor be suffocated and overwhelmed by difficulties. Overcoming the rigidity of human nature is equally important."
What do you mean?
“The world is rigid, people tend to maintain the role they have. When you are young, you are more afraid because you have more to lose and therefore you try to preserve your social role. But you have to overcome the rigidity, train the ability to change in your head, with your hands and your heart. Work environments are increasingly looking for people who know how to get involved and those who know how to do it can make a difference. Flexibility is fundamental life skill, and you learn it through education, training, and good advice. I learned it the hard way: I spent most of my life in developing countries, and in Israel in the 1990s and then in the Middle East and Africa."
Bringing Italian excellence to the world. How is the Italian industrial sector doing?
"Italians are usually warmly welcomed all over the world, this is certainly an asset. Italian products and the 'made in Italy' concept offer a huge competitive advantage that we must become more and more aware of. As Italians we must work on it, it's now or never. Our products are an emotion that touches all the citizens of the planet, that speaks to the feelings of those who are predisposed to beauty, who know how to enjoy it. We must build on this advantage and pass it on."
About Gianluca Fiume
With a degree in Economics and Commerce that he earned on 21 May 1992, Gianluca Fiume entered the world of work serving in the Carabinieri. Then he moved on to the sales sector for television programmes and advertising for Multigram Srl, a Europe-wide player in the television sector. In the years that followed he devoted his skills and expertise to Benetton and Beretta. He has been in the Piaggio group for 18 years, since 2017 as head of the Asia Pacific 2 Wheeler and China divisions. As the testimonial of the graduation ceremony of Friday 8 May 2026, he sat for an interview with UniTrentoMag to tell us about his "passions and values", and the "sacrifices and sleepless nights" that led him to become who he is today.
