«My goal in life? To change the world, bit by bit». Sorridente, diretto, ispirato: Suhas Dharwad ha 24 anni e le idee chiare, il suo obiettivo nella vita è rendere il mondo un posto migliore «un po' alla volta». Lo vuole fare con l'aiuto della tecnologia e per questo motivo ha deciso di iscriversi al corso di laurea magistrale in "Human-Computer Interaction" del Dipartimento di Psicologia e Scienze cognitive e del Dipartimento di Ingegneria e Scienza dell'Informazione. All'Università di Trento è arrivato da Hubli (una città in India nello stato Karnataka) nel 2024, con tanta voglia di conoscere l'Europa e con questo spirito sta vivendo ora un'esperienza Erasmus all'Università di Twente nei Paesi Bassi. A rendere possibile queste esperienze è stato il supporto della Divisione Servizi didattici e studenti del Polo di Rovereto, dell’Ufficio Mobilità internazionale di Rovereto, dell’Ufficio Ammissioni e Inclusione e della Divisione Relazioni internazionali. Suhas ha infatti perso la vista quando aveva 18 anni. Una vicenda personale da cui oggi trae ispirazione per la sua ricerca e che racconta con il desiderio di «essere di ispirazione per gli altri».
«Ho imparato che nella vita, qualche volta, devi dipendere dagli altri e non c'è da vergognarsi a chiedere alle persone che ti circondano». Non usa giri di parole Suhas: è l'entusiasmo a guidare il racconto della sua storia, un ritmo incalzante che ogni tanto rallenta e lascia spazio a una riflessione, una briciola di saggezza. «Ho ottenuto il mio diploma di laurea triennale in Computer studies in India, mio Paese d’origine, nel 2023 — ricorda —, un indirizzo di studi che ho scelto perché mi è sempre piaciuto creare software. Concluso questo percorso ho deciso di partire: volevo scoprire l'Europa e un mio amico mi ha parlato molto bene dell'Italia». «Non conoscevo Trento, né la sua Università — prosegue — ma l'ho trovata online, nella classifica dei migliori atenei del mondo (il riferimento è ai Times Higher Education Rankings, ndr) e ho scoperto che, a differenza di altri atenei italiani che avevo preso in considerazione, offre diversi servizi a supporto delle persone ipovedenti». «Un'informazione che ha fatto pendere l'ago della bilancia a favore di UniTrento, assieme alla presenza di un corso di studi di mio interesse», ricorda.
Suhas ci tiene molto a ringraziare il personale che lo ha seguito e in particolare l'Ufficio Mobilità internazionale che gli ha consentito di partire ancora con il programma Erasmus+ studio. «Ho perso completamente la vista quando avevo 18 anni — racconta —, prima vedevo un po’ ed ero autonomo. In India non mi sono sentito aiutato, anzi, mi è capitato di essere emarginato, tanto che spesso a lezione sedevo da solo. Perciò ho deciso di fare un’esperienza all’estero ed è stata una bella sorpresa trovare in Italia un ambiente così inclusivo e a Trento tanti amici. Con loro mi sono divertito molto e ho anche viaggiato: siamo stati ad esempio a Vienna e a Mantova. Viaggiare è una delle mie passioni: da poco sono tornato da un viaggio a Parigi e vorrei programmare qualche giorno in Danimarca».
«Se dovessi descrivere in poche parole la mia esperienza a Trento sceglierei “entusiasmante”, “inclusiva” e “fantastica”. Nonostante lo choc culturale che ho vissuto quando sono arrivato — dice ancora lo studente —. All’inizio non capivo la lingua e in Italia poche persone parlano l’inglese. È stato difficile anche abituarsi al cibo che decisamente non è speziato come quello indiano. Un problema di gusto che per me ha anche quello nederlandese». E la sua esperienza nei Paesi Bassi? «Direi “molto interessante” per quanto riguarda la cultura. L’inclusività? Al campus hanno installato, su mio suggerimento, dei percorsi tattili». 
Suhas spende un altro pensiero per l'accoglienza trentina: «Vorrei ringraziare l’Ufficio Ammissioni e Inclusione per il sistema di supporto alla pari che ho trovato a Trento e a Rovereto. Avevo uno studente accompagnatore di riferimento, per me è stato organizzato un tour del Dipartimento e mi hanno perfino portato a vedere dove è la macchinetta del caffè: un’informazione del genere non è superflua, significa autonomia personale, indipendenza». «Come l’installazione di pulsanti in Braille sulle stesse macchinette o sui sistemi touchscreen, che ormai sono ovunque, anche sui piani a induzione — aggiunge —. I designer dovrebbero tener conto delle persone ipovedenti quando progettano gli elettrodomestici per permettere a tutti di utilizzarli, indipendentemente dalle abilità di ciascuno. Il problema si può tra l’altro risolvere facilmente, ad esempio con l’installazione ex post di marcatori tattili».
A Enschede Suhas, ha trovato una routine nel campus: «Non devo uscire quotidianamente, né per andare a lezione, né in biblioteca. C’è anche un supermercato interno, anche se spesso preferisco andare a fare la spesa in città. Sono arrivato all’Università di Twente lo scorso agosto e il mio programma prevedeva che tornassi in Italia a gennaio 2026, ma ho chiesto un prolungamento di quattro mesi per portare a termine il mio tirocinio. Qui ho trovato una bella opportunità con un professore che si occupa dei miei temi di interesse: il nostro progetto di ricerca cerca di capire come migliorare l’interazione tra robot e persone con cecità. Studiamo come avviene ad esempio il passaggio di un oggetto e stiamo sviluppando un braccio robotico. La mia esperienza personale è veramente alla base della mia ricerca».
Un tirocinio che finirà a maggio e i cui risultati Suhas conta di trasferire nella tesi di laurea che ha in programma di discutere a ottobre, in corso, prima della fine del secondo anno di studi all’Università di Trento. Pensando al futuro non può mancare, infine, un accenno ai sogni di un ragazzo che vorrebbe davvero «contribuire al cambiamento»: «Finita la magistrale, vorrei continuare la mia ricerca, concentrandomi anche sugli aspetti dell'inclusività e dell'accessibilità, sto già lavorando al mio portfolio».

From India to Trento and the Netherlands «counting on others»: Suhas talks about his Erasmus
«My goal in life? To change the world, bit by bit». Suhas Dharwad, 24 years old, is confident, inspired and has clear ideas about the future. His goal in life is to make the world a better place «bit by bit». He wants to do it with the help of technology and for this reason he decided to enrol in the Master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction of the Department of Psychology and Cognitive Science and the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science. He arrived at the University of Trento from Hubli – an Indian city in the state of Karnataka – in 2024, eager to get to know Europe. Now, with this spirit, he is in the middle of an Erasmus exchange at the University of Twente, in the Netherlands. Suhas was able to participate in these experiences thanks to the support he received from the Students Services Division of the Rovereto campus, the International Mobility Office of Rovereto, the Admissions and Inclusion Office and the International Relations Division. Suhas lost his sight when he was 18, but he draws strength from this experience and recounts it to «be an inspiration for others».
«I have learned that in life, sometimes, you have to depend on others and there is no shame in asking for help». Suhas is very clear: he is full of energy as he tells his story, at a very high pace with a few pauses that leave some space for reflection, a shred of wisdom. «I obtained my Bachelor's degree in Computer Studies in India, my home country, in 2023 — he recalls — I had chosen that course of study because I have always enjoyed creating software. At the end of my studies, I decided to leave: I wanted to discover Europe and a friend of mine spoke very well of Italy». «I did not know Trento, nor its University — he continues — but I found it online, in the ranking of the best universities in the world (the reference is to the Times Higher Education Rankings, ed.) and I found out that, unlike other Italian universities that I had considered, it offers various services to support the visually impaired. This information, together with the presence of a programme of study that I found very interesting, tipped the scales in favour of UniTrento» he says.
Suhas would like to thank all the University staff who supported him and in particular the International Mobility Office that allowed him to leave for the Netherlands with the Erasmus+ programme for study. «I completely lost my sight when I was 18 — he says — before, I could see a little and I was autonomous. In India I did not feel helped, on the contrary, I happened to be marginalized, so much so that I often sat alone in class. So I decided to participate in a study experience abroad and it was a nice surprise to find such an inclusive environment in Italy and many friends in Trento. I had a great time with them and I also travelled: we visited Vienna and Mantova, for example. Travelling is one of my passions: I've recently returned from a trip to Paris and I would like to plan a few days in Denmark».
«If I had to describe my experience in Trento in a few words, I would choose "exciting", "inclusive" and "fantastic", despite the culture shock I experienced when I arrived — he says—. At first, I did not understand the language and in Italy few people speak English. It was also difficult to get used to food that is definitely not as spicy as Indian food. I find the same problem with the Dutch cuisine too». His experience in the Netherlands? «I would say "very interesting" as far as culture is concerned. Inclusivity? On campus, they installed tactile paths at my suggestion».
Suhas spends another thought on the welcoming reception he received in Trentino: «I would like to thank the Admissions and Inclusion Office for the peer support system that I found in Trento and Rovereto. I had a student companion assigned to me, I was offered a guided tour of the department, and they even took me to the vending machines area: such information is very important for me, it means personal autonomy, independence». «The same goes for the installation of Braille buttons on the machines themselves or on touchscreen systems, which are now everywhere, even on induction hobs — he adds —. Designers should take the visually impaired into account when designing appliances to allow everyone to use them, regardless of ability. Besides, the problem can be easily solved, for example with the ex-post installation of tactile markers».
Now Suhas has a new routine on campus in Enschede: «I don't have to go out every day, to go to class or to the library. There is also an internal supermarket, although I often prefer to go shopping in the city. I arrived at the University of Twente last August and I should have gone back to Italy in January 2026, based on my programme, but I asked for a four-month extension to complete my internship. Here I found a nice opportunity with a professor who works with my topics of interest: our research project tries to understand how to improve the interaction between robots and visually impaired people. We study how objects are handed over, for example, and we are developing a robotic arm. My personal experience is really the basis of my research».
Suhas will complete his traineeship in May and he plans to transfer the results in his thesis that he plans to discuss in October, while still on track, before the end of the second year of studies at the University of Trento. Finally, thinking about the future, we must mention the dreams of a boy who would really like to «contribute to change»: «After my master's degree, I would like to continue my research, also focusing on the aspects of inclusivity and accessibility, and I am already working on my portfolio».
